OUIL505 End of Module Self Evaluation
So Context Of Practise has once again been very difficult for me. I found just getting started on the essay and practical work. The hardest bit was a subject I was interested in. Finding a subject I wanted to send time investigating and with article and source material I could read and understand. I did start out First trying to look at Austerity, as it is greatly visible in today’s modern world. When I first started doing research on this subject I thought it was going to be ok but then when I started looking at books and articles it was written in political speech and I struggled a lot with it, so I moved on to something else. Then I wanted to look at how Art and Academic subjects are prevised in the contemporary world today, this is a subject I find really interesting. Then I started to struggle to source research for this subject and that became a pain so once again I moved on to find a better subject.
Then whilst talking to my student support worker Christen about lectures I had attended this year, that’s when Panopticism was remembered and how much I had enjoyed Richards lecture so the subject was decided, late but done.
Once I had settled on the subject of Panopticism I set about researching it and the more I learnt about the subject the more I wanted to learn. I read a lot of articles from the guardian newspaper and started to came up with the material I could build a project on. I really enjoyed reading and learning about the panoptic design and how it has been used since he 17th century.
I quickly learnt I had to check the sources of the material I was reading on this subject as I found a lot of articles that where no good to me and full other information I could not found backed up.
I have spent a couple of hours a week in student support getting help with my research and the information I was recording making sure I was staying on subject. Without the support of the support department this essay would have been a disaster.
When I have finally got round to starting my Practical side of this unit again I have struggled a lot in trying to come up with visual ideas. At first I got stuck drawing CCTV cameras and although I had ideas with what to do with them time was no longer on my side. So I had to come up with something quick and simple. Iv not really liked doing publication and book before but this time I decided to try keep myself interested in the subject and just do a simple story based on my research into Panopticism. It’s just someone going to find and destroy a data-thieving monster in London town. I tried to get the storey across in my illustrations but I feel I needed to do more development work to make it flow more and definitely more pages. I have used speech bubbles and text to try help tell the story more.
The Biggest issue with my publication is I will not have a printed out copy as I left it too late to get in printed, this is due to poor time management. I spent far too long at the beginning of this brief trying to find a subject I wanted to research and in turn that has had a massive knock on effect on every part of this project. My publication has taken the biggest knock on with this but I have tried to do a nice hand drawn version of it instead of not doing it at all. I am very annoyed with myself about this as it has really let my hop 501 project down. I did really enjoy drawing the book but the end product is weak.. The storey I feel after finishing it is not very clear and will decently plan ahead when I next try doing a storey. The only good points is me drawing things iv been previously not felt comfortable drawing, although they could do with some more practice I’m happy with my growing confidence in my drawing and feel I need to work hard at this to keep it going forward.
Overall I have not enjoyed doing the writing side of this project I struggle a lot and this just makes me not want to do it but I have hopefully my changes to this already to help me in level 6, as I have already asked for help next year on my dissertation and will be starting to source as much research as I can over the summer. I have also found out I can still receive some support in the summer break to help me with my research and to get me off on the right foot as soon as possible. This is a opportunity I will be taking up. Well time management has turned into my biggest weakness and its really starting to hinder my projects. I need to start on projects start away and not put it to one side for weeks until the deadline is fast approaching.

COP3 Proposal pdf
Question 6: To
what extent has Illustration constructed our understanding or view of
historical events and perceptions of truth?
Look at how illustration has been used to if at all has it
had a positive or negative effect on the world. How have the governments/media
used illustration to they gain.
Is comtempary illustration sensed and watered down so it is
best for the viewer and not true to what the artist believes.
I’m going to continue to look at Panopticism and how this is
theory feels very real in our modern world. Going to in investigate the subject
further and see where the theory has left us in our time. How could by be told
how to act and behave could this have a impacted in the creative world and does
it influence what kind of art is out in the world.
Look at the related subject such as architecture o see like
this subject subject that is very much identified by the time period it was
developed in.
How do historical event have a effect on the out come of
illustration and have we become too concerned with political correctness and nt
offending people to really draw what we
want.

So after too much time trying how i am best to illustrate Panopticism I have finally run out of time to waste and need to start drawing. So I WAS PLAYING AROUND WIT THE IDEA OF CCTV CAMRA HEADS REPLACING EVERYTHING AND THE CONSTANT WATCH OVER US. THIS WOULD OF BEEN A GREAT IDEA IF I HAD STARTED IS WEEKS AGO. SO IM JUST GOING TO DO A COMIC BOOK STYLE STOREY (sorry caps lock was on and i type looking at the keyboard) I think im just going to tell a story of how someone can be tracked and monitored without even knowing it.
Here is the start of the roughs, layouts and ideas for the publication.

Panopticism institution and instructional
Power of groups that over power over other groups.
Physical institution condition our thoughts and behaviours make some people succeed and don't.
Our thoughts ideas are influenced by the society.
Disposing to control and to shape us.
Essay- start of with history and build upwards.
Who ever was confirmed useless was punished and locked up and then was forced house of correction-to work in production work. If you didn't work in the house of correction you was beaten until you worked. The birth of the asylum, hospital, the prison to direct to a certain group of people. The asylum operated on a different disopling, the used different techniques to control the insane. The inmates was infantised, they was treated like children, by reworded when behaving in correctly.
With the birth of infatuation came the birth of forms of knowledge of special. Biology, psychiatry, medical, etc.
They all sure in one way or another, to teach us to control our selfs.
In pre modern times, were we had a King, the goal of punishment wasn't to control or to train, the goal of punishment was to be grizzly... If people could see the punishment, this is what happens to you when you don't behave. To show the power of the King. The control of the King over your body.
The modern society use more mental methods of discipline,
Panopticon - Jeremy Bentham
Was a design for a building. A multifunctional space, a hospital, prison, asylum or a uni. A place were individuals would be kept. Have been used today as prisons
London Tate gallery was once a prison ground- cube prison, institutional gaze,
Because of the lay out and design the cells are designed to only be. Able to see the watch tower at the middle. The view of the controller.
In the panopticon you are been watched and every move is been recorded.
The panopticon internalises in the individual the conscious state that he is always being watched. After a while of been watched you will conform and create self regulation.
- reforms prisoners
- Helps treats patients
- Helps instruct schoolchildren
- Helps confine but also study the insane
- Helps supervise workers
They was so effective that actually after a while you don't need a supervisor for the panopticon to work.
This is how our society organises the knowledge, it's power, it's surveillance of bodies and it's training of bodies.
This method is used today, call centres and office space are now more open plan and are visible to the boss, makes them scare not to work because they are more on display. Even pubs with open design and having the bar tender on view at all time. Feel soulless because there open spaced and your always on display. We live in a cctv way. Not just about watching it's about recording the behaviour.
The cult o the gym, you could figure the cult of health as the panopticon method. Punish your self, train your self to perfection. Been told how to eat and what to eat and hat is healthy for you.is it to make you healthier to make you work longer because of the work retirement age.
Facebook the most panopticon place ever evidence of today. Allows you to watch and be watched by others, can't really be your self on this its all about making an image of what you think others want to see you as.
Somthing to our day to day were we are watching to or video games were it shows what it is to be a man or woman or healthy or a successful life. These are not our thoughts these are chosen for us.
The excercise of power relies on there being the capacity for the power to resisted.
Where there is power the is resistance.
Power actually trains us in the way that poeple expect of us, even though it's a mental prosess. Is courses us to self monitoring, self correction obedient bodied (docile bodies )
Desire
Sigmund Freud
A theory of desire-
Repression and the unconscious
The unconscious in unknowable
A structure of the human psyche unconscious pre conscious and the conscious zones
Infantile sexuality stages of psycho sexual development
Primitive drives Eros (libido) and Thanatos (death instinct)
developed extensive theories about the psyche and human sexuality
Freud structural model
The top represents the conscious of our self
The mid section the subconscious
The lower the unconscious
ID the word that Freud made up to call the unconscious.
Freud cast study
Little hans- symptoms- generalised anxiety and acute fear of horses, bitten by an horse
Origin-Oedipus complex- hans Oedipal desire and subsequent castration anxieties sustained unconsciously and manifested as fear of horses (symbolically the horse represents his farther.
Recovery.
Phobia of the horses was accompanied by two significant fantasies which he told of his father. In the first hans had several imaginary children. When asked who their mother was, hand replied why mummy and your their granddaddy. I'm the second fantasy, which occurred the next day hans imagined that a plumber had come and removed his bottom and widower and then gave him another one of each but larger.
Jacques lacan-
Language constitutes thought - language thinks me, I exist within language as a discourse
The arbitrariness / differential nature of language allows that meaning psyhic is allowed to change and distort- symptoms desires.
Desire is neither the appetite for satisfaction, nor the demand for love, but the difference that results from the subtraction of the first from the second
Lacan stresses grows and becomes more independent this leftover desire must be directed towards normal rational things.
I am able to desire because I am desirable.
Identification with a parental figure, the infant must identify with a parental figure in order to successfully overcome the Oedipus complex - this identification formulates the subject conception on their gender - the parental figure being the archetype of that gender.
