A few bits about art that has caused public upset - Art Censorship

These Are The Most Controversial Illustrations You Will See This Year

Powerful social commentary.

Luis Quiles a Spanish artist he does illustrations of social issues but uses his own voice in the images which are very tough subjects but done in a way that helps us soft types look at the issue. Look up his work and others that address sensitive social issues and see if i can find any reviews on they work and what others say about them.

The naked truth: A history of art censorship

https://en.artmediaagency.com/73993/73993/

Tells how all though history art has been censored weather it be because it has nudity, political and religion. Religion seems to be a key theme emerging within censorship.

"The ongoing shock of the nude
Centuries after Michelangelo’s figures were forcibly clothed, nudity continued to shock the public, with new styles of production and differing approaches to the figure perpetuating the idea of the body as a battle ground."

Art Censorship: A few thoughts about censorship

by Brian Sherwin on 11/15/2012 1:22:25 PM

"After all, if you demand the censorship of what you consider 'unacceptable' today... you leave yourself open for views / opinions that you cherish ending up deemed 'unacceptable' tomorrow."

Thomas Jefferson's statement is powerful. We should all repeat it a few times when censorship is placed on the table: "I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as a cause for withdrawing from a friend."

COP 3 Initial Reserch

I have started by looking at censorship, especially surrounding the art world as it is often unclear what the rules and boundaries of art are. My initial research proposal involves looking into the area in order to develop my research question.

This journey began following from my previous essay on surveillance and panopticism.

Videos from vice about Surveillance.

'State of Surveillance' with Edward Snowden

This one is mainly based on the american side of survaliance, but as its 2016 these things will also appy on a global level.

UK surveillance cameras (smart cameras)

Putting trust into cameras that work off statistics that determine if your been good or bad.

Research about surveillance led me to think about how the art industry is currently controlled by an unseen power very much like in the panoptic design leading to a concentration of research around censorship.

So Context Of Practise has once again been very difficult for me. I found just getting started on the essay and practical work. The hardest bit was a subject I was interested in.  Finding a subject I wanted to send time investigating and with article and source material I could read and understand. I did start out First trying to look at Austerity, as it is greatly visible in today’s modern world. When I first started doing research on this subject I thought it was going to be ok but then when I started looking at books and articles it was written in political speech and I struggled a lot with it, so I moved on to something else. Then I wanted to look at how Art and Academic subjects are prevised in the contemporary world today, this is a subject I find really interesting. Then I started to struggle to source research for this subject and that became a pain so once again I moved on to find a better subject.
Then whilst talking to my student support worker Christen about lectures I had attended this year, that’s when Panopticism was remembered and how much I had enjoyed Richards lecture so the subject was decided, late but done.
Once I had settled on the subject of Panopticism I set about researching it  and the more I learnt about the subject the more I wanted to learn. I read a lot of articles from the guardian newspaper and started to came up with the material I could build a project on. I really enjoyed reading and learning about the panoptic design and how it has been used since he 17th century.
I quickly learnt I had to check the sources of the material I was reading on this subject as I found a lot of articles that where no good to me and full other information I could not found backed up.
I have spent a couple of hours a week in student support getting help with my research and the information I was recording making sure I was staying on subject. Without the support of the support department this essay would have been a disaster.
When I have finally got round to starting my Practical side of this unit again I have struggled a lot in trying to come up with visual ideas. At first I got stuck drawing CCTV cameras and although I had ideas with what to do with them time was no longer on my side. So I had to come up with something quick and simple. Iv not really liked doing publication and book before but this time I decided to try keep myself interested in the subject and just do a simple story based on my research into Panopticism. It’s just someone going to find and destroy a data-thieving monster in London town. I tried to get the storey across in my illustrations but I feel I needed to do more development work to make it flow more and definitely more pages. I have used speech bubbles and text to try help tell the story more.
The Biggest issue with my publication is I will not have a printed out copy as I left it too late to get in printed, this is due to poor time management. I spent far too long at the beginning of this brief trying to find a subject I wanted to research and in turn that has had a massive knock on effect on every part of this project. My publication has taken the biggest knock on with this but I have tried to do a nice hand drawn version of it instead of not doing it at all. I am very annoyed with myself about this as it has really let my hop 501 project down. I did really enjoy drawing the book but the end product is weak.. The storey I feel after finishing it is not very clear and will decently plan ahead when I next try doing a storey. The only good points is me drawing things iv been previously not felt comfortable drawing, although they could do with some more practice I’m happy with my growing confidence in my drawing and feel I need to work hard at this to keep it going forward.

Overall I have not enjoyed doing the writing side of this project I struggle a lot and this just makes me not want to do it but I have hopefully my changes to this already to help me in level 6, as I have already asked for help next year on my dissertation and will be starting to source as much research as I can over the summer. I have also found out I can still receive some support in the summer break to help me with my research and to get me off on the right foot as soon as possible. This is a opportunity I will be taking up. Well time management has turned into my biggest weakness and its really starting to hinder my projects. I need to start on projects start away and not put it to one side for weeks until the deadline is fast approaching.

Question 6: To what extent has Illustration constructed our understanding or view of historical events and perceptions of truth?

Look at how illustration has been used to if at all has it had a positive or negative effect on the world. How have the governments/media used illustration to they gain.
Is comtempary illustration sensed and watered down so it is best for the viewer and not true to what the artist believes.
I’m going to continue to look at Panopticism and how this is theory feels very real in our modern world. Going to in investigate the subject further and see where the theory has left us in our time. How could by be told how to act and behave could this have a impacted in the creative world and does it influence what kind of art is out in the world.
Look at the related subject such as architecture o see like this subject subject that is very much identified by the time period it was developed in.

How do historical event have a effect on the out come of illustration and have we become too concerned with political correctness and nt offending people to  really draw what we want.

Metadata is data that describes other data. Meta is a prefix that in most information technology usages means "an underlying definition or description." Metadata summarizes basic information about data, which can make finding and working with particular instances of data easier.
